… when was the wing chair born?
The wing chair was developed around 1600 in chilly England. In the cold brick houses, the fireplace was the main source of heating. As there was often a draught in the homes, the question arose as to how one could protect one’s back from the cold breeze. Normal chairs proved to be inadequate, as they protected the back but left the sides open. This gave rise to the idea of providing the sides of the seat with protection, which led to the invention of the wing chair. This 17th-century idea also met with great interest among the French elite. At the court of Louis XVI, people began to design comfortable and solid armchairs in which they could hide and sit comfortably. People dreamed of warming themselves by the fire outside as well as in an ordinary apartment and putting their frozen feet to the fire.
